Tire Shop Taqueria, Los Angeles, CA
El Jarocho tire shop, 4069 South Avalon Blvd, Los Angeles
Open Thursday-Monday, 6 pm-11 pm
It’s rare to find truly authentic Mexican tacos north of the border. Most of what is generally considered to be decent Mexican fare in the States wouldn’t be looked at twice in the Distrito Federal or the suburbs of Tijuana, which is why the Tire Shop Taqueria is such a mind-blowing find, and why the tacos at Tire Shop Taqueria are worth every penny.
Set in the unprepossessing location of a tire shop parking lot, the Tire Shop Taqueria is a true rough diamond. With folding plastic chairs and drinks coolers making up the ambiance, it might not look like much, but the carne asada tacos that come off the wood-fired grill are to die for, and Tire Shop tacos are probably the best tacos to be found anywhere in LA.
Carne asada literally translates as grilled meat, and is a norteno specialty, from Tijuana, Sonora, and Sinaloa. Sumptuous, succulent slices of grilled meat sit on handmade tortillas and are garnished liberally with lime, guac and salsa roja, creating a genuine taste sensation in your mouth.
Coming in at around $1.50 a pop, you’ll get a proper feed and still get change from a 10 dollar bill. This delightfully unassuming place is a must-visit for anyone who wants to get a true taste of Mexico in L.A.
