In case you’ve never heard of the drink April Showers, it will be your new favorite springtime drink. Either way, this is the spring freshness you were yearning for all winter. To add a touch of spring to your drink garnish it with an edible flower. Look for “edible flowers” in the produce section in a grocery store. There are many different takes on the April Showers cocktail. Here we will give you two very different recipes, one more citrusy- it uses vodka or gin and has a splash of grapefruit and lemon juice in it and the other more spicy, it uses bourbon and has a touch of bitters, butterfly-pea infused vanilla syrup with a splash of champagne. Take your pick below!
Recipe 1: April Showers with a touch of citrus
This recipe is made using fresh lemon juice, agave, pink grapefruit juice, and gin (or a spirit of your choice) but feel free to change the juices to your liking. Another variation for this drink can be fresh lemon juice, agave, orange juice, and vodka.
Tips: If you like your drink sweeter add more agave, if you prefer it tart add more grapefruit juice.
Serving Tips: Glass choice depends on how you want your presentation to be. You can use martini glasses, coupe glasses, or choose to serve it on ice in a shot glass.
3 ounces of gin (or spirit of your choice, vodka would be delicious too!)
1-ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ½ tablespoons agave
6 ounces ruby red grapefruit juice
Edible Flowers to decorate, optional but makes it look super cute!
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the gin (or choice of spirit), lemon juice, agave, and grapefruit juice. Shake the shaker for 10 seconds. Pout into glass. Add the edible flower for garnish
Recipe 2: April Showers with a touch of spice and syrup
This cocktail was created by Tiffanie Barriere who is a bar consultant and an educator. In her recipe, she uses champagne, bourbon, and vanilla syrup which all act together to create the perfect cocktail.
For this recipe, you will need to make the butterfly pea-infused vanilla syrup as well.
Glass choice, coupe glasses are suggested but you can always use the glass of your choice.
1 ½ ounce of Maker’s Mark (or another wheat bourbon)
½ ounces butterfly pea-infused vanilla syrup (recipe below)
1/’4 ounces oloroso sherry
4 dashes Angostura bitters
1-ounce brut champagne
Baby’s breath for garnish
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the bourbon, vanilla syrup, oloroso sherry, and bitters in a shaker. Shake for 10 seconds.
With the help of a strainer pour into a coupe glass or a glass of your choice. Top with champagne.
Garnish with baby’s breath or an edible flower of your choice
Butterfly Pea-infused vanilla syrup
1 cup water
½ cup sugar
2-4 butterfly pea buds (you can find this on amazon.com)
1 vanilla bean, halved
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Wait until the liquid turns a blue-purple color.
Once it turns blue-purple, remove it from heat and let it cool.
You can store this in a glass container or a tupperware in the fridge for up to 2 weeks!
