Apple picking is one of the signature fall activities. The U.S. Apple Association states that 240 million bushels of apples are grown for visitors to pick and enjoy every year. If you like farms, being outdoors and, of course, apples it’s the perfect weekend activity for you.

Here are some of the best orchards in the country to enjoy apple picking! 

Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm: Yorktown Heights, New York

Only an hour or a little less from the city this farm has much to offer. It’s known for its wide variety of fruit and vegetables. The apple picking season starts from August and goes until mid- December. The farm has a market stocked with baked goods such as apple pies, cider doughnuts, and strudel sticks. The farm also has a vineyard that is open year round so you can sip on some wine once you are there. During Christmas season the farm also offers pick-your-own Christmas trees! 

Demarest Farms: Hillsdale, New Jersey

Only approximately 30 minutes from Manhattan, Demarest Farms is the only pick your own orchard for nectarines, peaches, pumpkins, and apples. The farm not only offers orchards but also has petting zoos and playgrounds for the kids and a picnic area for the adults to enjoy the apple cider doughnuts or apple pie they get from the farm’s store. Be sure to get your ticket ahead of time because it gets very crowded. 

Honey Pot Hill Orchards: Stow, Massachusetts

Honey Pot Hill Orchards is about an hour from Boston. This orchard is nearly 100 years old. The orchard not only produces apples but also pears, blueberries, and peaches, so there is something to pick every season. The apple picking season starts late August and goes until late December. The orchard offers 14 different varieties of apples. 

Los Rios Rancho: Oak Glen, California

This orchard has been operated by the same family, the Riley family, since 1906. The orchard is about an hour and half from downtown LA. The apple picking season starts in August and goes till December. They offer 14 different varieties of apples. They have an onsite eatery that offers delicious apple-based products including but not limited to apple strudel. If you visit on the weekends they even have live music to bring even more joy to your apple picking adventure. 

Apple Holler: Sturtevant, Wisconsin

Only 30 minutes from Milwaukee you’ll find Apple Holler a 78-acre family operated farm. If you live close enough you can even enjoy their dairy farm that offers fresh produce daily. The farm originally opened as a dairy farm in the 1900’s they have since upgraded to having a bakery, gift shop, and even a restaurant. Their bakery is famous for its Apple Strudel. The farm offers pick-up farms for apples, peaches, and pears. While the season for apple picking is from early August to late October they offer many seasonal activities to enjoy year round. 

Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyards: Starlight, Indiana 

Huber’s Orchard is around 30 minutes from Louisville, Kentucky. It’s 600-plus acres full of apple orchards and vineyards, since it’s so big they offer wagons to take people to the fields. They offer many delicious apple products some of them being apple sangria, ice cream, and even apple dumplings. Solebury Orchards: New Hope, Pennsylvania

While this orchard is only open on the weekends it makes up for it by offering delicious products from apple cider to apple cider doughnuts at its shop. The Orchard is only an hour’s drive from Philadelphia and is in the vicinity of the cute and vibrant town of New Hope. It’s a great place to go with kids since it has a little playground and a complimentary wagon ride to the trees.

Deardorff Orchards: Waconia, Minnesota

This Orchard is full of fun and exciting things to do. The farm is around 40 minutes from Minneapolis. It’s the perfect place to take your kids since there is a haystack play area and farm animals. The farm grows apples and grapes. They also offer a winery tasting room where you can sip on some samples that are made from fresh grapes on the farm.
