Welcome to Florianopolis, Brazil!
Florianopolis is the capital of the Brazilian state, Santa Catarina. If you’ve looked at a map recently you’ve noticed that Brazil is absolutely massive, and hosts many different cultures, people, and environments, that make up the landscape. Brazil is also a very popular tourist destination, with many international travelers hitting the streets of Sao Paulo and the beaches of Rio. Florianopolis is the new popular destination, especially among Brazilian locals looking for a tropical beach getaway and some time away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.
For the worldwide local interested in beaches, culture, and nature, Florianopolis is the place for you. Make sure to hit up these great spots in the city.
Worldwide Local Tip: Florianopolis has the benefit of being a relatively small city, meaning that getting around to the hotspots and beaches is pretty easy. However, the public transport system does not always run very efficiently; so while you will eventually get to the beach, it might take up to an hour. Plan ahead or if you’re splurging, rent a vehicle.
Get the Lay of the Land
Florianopolis is an interesting place because it is split between the mainland and an island off the coast, connected by the Hercilio Luz Bridge--the city’s biggest landmark. The island part is where you’ll find most of the culture and beautiful historic center. Similar to many cities in Europe, colonial-era buildings carry many motifs with large plazas surrounded by architecture, from a bygone era. The historic center of town is a great place to start your adventure, in Florianopolis, as you’ll find many local cafes, restaurants, and important landmarks like the Cathedral Metropolitana, as well as big green parks and plazas, with locals going about their day.
Worldwide Local Tip: To understand the people of the city, a worldwide local needs to go where they go. The central market, in the historic district, is both a landmark and a place of shopping for the locals. The market has been here since 1883 as a place for spice traders to sell goods to the European market.
Relax on the Florianopolis Beaches!
Florianopolis has been a great spot for Brazilians from major cities looking for a beach vacation. The city has over 40 different beaches, some connected to Florianopolis hotels and others not. Eastern beaches, like Joaquina and Mole, are great for surfing and watersports, which tend to attract a younger crowd. Lagohina do Leste and Naufragados are a little quieter and relaxed, with unspoiled nature, and Praia da Galheta is the nudist beach. No matter which beach you choose, you’ll spend the day basking in the sun, enjoying the glorious Florianopolis weather!
Worldwide Local Tip: After spending the day at the beach, enjoy the Florianopolis nightlife at one of the city’s many nightclubs. Florianopolis is a party town that was declared, “Party Destination of the Year,” by the New York Times. Many clubs and lounges are located on or near the beach, and they all tend to come alive at night. You can go from working on your tan in the afternoon to working on your fourth rum and coke, without ever leaving the beach.
Don’t Miss Fortaleza de Santo Antonio de Ratones
If you’re tired of hanging out on the beach, go on a little adventure to check out some of the historic forts located around the island. The Fortaleza de Santo Antonio de Ratones is located in the north bay on the island and was built in the 18th century to keep Portuguese reign over the colony. If you’re in the north, the Fortaleza de Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa is also worth checking out.
Worldwide Local Tip: For the nature going people, the Serra do Tabuleiro State Park is worth a trip. Located on the mainland part of Florianopolis, you’ll find beautiful waterfalls, mountains, and rivers, as well as the chance to get close and personal with wildlife. It’s a great spot for those who want to be with nature and get away from the beach.
